A security guard was killed when fire broke out in the 16-storey Paramount Height commercial building in the Fakirapool area of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The fire engulfed several floors of the building and filled the entire building with smoke. Witnesses said the fire appeared to have originated from electric equipment that was housed on the second floor of the building. The body of the victim was however recovered by firefighters on the 13th floor of the building, which is believed to have housed more than 50 offices.

Crews form 13 firefighting vehicles tackled the blaze. While an electrical short circuit is suspected as being the cause of the blaze, investigations are underway.

Fire safety in Bangladesh falls well below western standards, and the country has been in the news previously following a series of garment factory fires in 2012 and 2013 that resulted in hundreds of deaths.
