At least 16 students were killed in a fire at a girls’ boarding school in Gilgil, Nakuru County, Kenya, officials said.

Seventy-nine others were injured. The school has more than 800 students.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Police and emergency teams responded to the incident.

Several students were evacuated and are receiving treatment in local hospitals.

The school is managed by the Kenya Police Service.

Many of the students are daughters of police officers.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims.
